Track of the Week: 2010 #23

Frightened Rabbit – Nothing Like You

In a year that has seen many a good but few great albums, Frightened Rabbit's third – The Winter Of Mixed Drinks – stands out as a competitor for being crowned the best. It's taken me a while to get around to listening to it, but suffice to say it's emotional impact from it's whisky heavy semi-acoustic rock songs, sung in a thick Scottish accent, is large.

It's a bit hard to pick a favourite track from Winter... but right now I'd plump for this single, for no other reason that it picks the album up to a triumphant note, starting the lyrics with one hell of a kiss off: “This is a story and you are not in it / Fought the pages torn out / Here is a bedroom that you’ve never been in / Here is your shovel / There’s the ground”.

I'm not going to pull the whole 'going through stuff' card, but there's moments of The Winter of Mixed Drinks that really resonate with me, right now. 'Nothing Like You' may not be one of these moments but it is still a fantastic single that, if you're not familiar with the band recalls in the vocals Idlewild and in the music a faster paced National.
